ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

The Health Care Management & Leadership micro-credential equips health care professionals with the skills needed to excel in today’s complex health care environment. Through four in-person modules, you’ll develop practical expertise in project management frameworks, economic evaluation methods, data visualization techniques, and decision-making models specifically tailored to health care settings. Each module blends theoretical foundations with hands-on application through case studies, simulation exercises, and collaborative activities. You’ll learn to lead effective health care projects, evaluate economic implications of health care decisions, interpret complex health care data, and optimize resource allocation—all skills that can be immediately applied in your professional context.

OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this program, you’ll be able to:

Module 1: Health Care Project Management and Leadership Develop practical skills in health care project management frameworks, organizational leadership strategies, and effective team management through case studies and simulation exercises.

Module 2: Health Care Economics and Program Evaluation Learn to design and critically assess economic evaluations for making informed health care decisions, with focus on maximizing benefits to patients and health care systems.

Module 3: Health Care Data Visualization and Data Interpretation Explore machine learning techniques for health care data visualization and interpretation, focusing on predictive models and patient data analysis.

Module 4: Health Care Decision-Making and Priority Setting Master health care optimization models, Program Budgeting and Marginal Analysis (PBMA), and simulation methods for effective resource allocation and priority setting.

In-person sessions will take place on the following dates:

  • September 19th and 20th (Friday and Saturday, 9 am – 5:00 pm)
  • October 24th and 25th (Friday and Saturday, 9 am – 5:00 pm)

This micro-credential consists of four 8-hour in-person learning modules delivered synchronously. Each module combines instructor-led presentations with interactive activities, case studies, and simulation exercises. Participants will also engage in reflective exercises and hands-on practice with relevant tools and methodologies.

Jennifer Davis | Course Instructor

Her career goal is to improve the health of Canadians through applied health economic evaluation and outcomes research. Jennifer’s research focuses on conducting economics evaluations alongside randomized controlled trials (i.e., cost-effectiveness and cost-utility analyses) in a variety of clinical settings that include falls, fracture and cognition. A core part of Jennifer’s current research program includes health outcomes research (i.e., exploring the value of patient reported outcome measures) in the fields of healthy aging (i.e., cognition, mobility) and various surgical outcomes.

Andrew Hughes | Guest Lecturer

Andrew Hughes has 18+ years of experience in health care & is currently enrolled in the Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) program at Royal Roads University.

Andrew brings a wealth of experience with various strategic, planning, and health care operational senior leadership roles in community, acute, tertiary, primary care, access and efficiency, capital facility planning, and pandemic response. Andrew has also achieved his: Masters in Social Work through the University of British Columbia, a Masters Certificate in Leadership through Royal Roads University, a Masters fellowship in Leadership through the faculty of Public Health, University of Alberta, & is currently designated as a Certified Health Executive through the College of Health Care Leadership, is Lean certified, and an adjunct professor at UBC for the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Andrew is valued for his strong leadership style, good track record, innovative thinking, nimbleness and flexibility to jump in to solve problems.

Dr. Harsh Hundal | Guest Lecturer

Dr. Harsh Hundal and his family are settlers on the traditional and unceded lands of the Okanagan Syilx peoples in Kelowna, BC. He is the former HAMAC Chair and the first EMD, Physician Engagement and Resource Planning for Interior Health.

After collecting degrees in public administration, economics, occupational therapy, and medicine, Harsh commenced work as a rural family physician in Cobourg, Ontario. He has worked in nearly every aspect of medicine from community to tertiary care, from mental health to physical rehabilitation, from urban to rural, from research to teaching to administration over the past 29 years. For co-creating the NAVIG8 Emerging Medical Leaders program and introducing dyad leadership at Interior Health, he received the BC Patient Safety and Quality Council Award for Leadership in Quality 2021.

Harsh is the father of 3 children on the autism spectrum who have taught him that respect and compassion should be at the very centre of our mission to continually improve health care.

He is encouraged in his pursuits as an actor and a nationally award winning playwright by his amazing and far more intelligent spouse, M.

Learners who attend at least 75% of class activities and achieve a 60% or higher grade will receive a Letter of Proficiency from UBC. This credential formally recognizes your demonstrated competence in health care management and leadership principles. Learners will also receive a digital badge that they can share to recognize this achievement.
