ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
This micro-credential offers practical training in Environmental Impact Assessment and the regulatory processes governing major development projects. Developed with contributions from colleagues in federal and provincial government and consultant organizations the program equips participants with knowledge of current legislation and Environmental Impact Assessment theory, as well as skills in impact analysis, technical writing, and communication.

OUTCOMES
By the end of this program, learners will be able to:

Describe foundational concepts of Environmental Impact Assessment, including basic steps, terminology, and best practices

Interpret current Environmental Impact Assessment legislation governing British Columbia and Canada, and navigate regulatory documents and submissions

Critically evaluate the application of Environmental Impact Assessment theory and legislation in Canadian and BC contexts

Apply knowledge of legislation and guidance using real case studies and EIA documents, including developing and reviewing technical writing assignments and verbal presentations

Those with backgrounds in technical sciences, social sciences, or humanities, as the program supports interdisciplinary learning
Learners will be prepared for roles in government, Indigenous organizations, development companies, and consulting firms.
$1,750 (first offering fee, ongoing tuition would be $1,995)
The 50 hour micro-credential is structured around 4 Modules which are completed online by learners. Module 1 covers Environmental Impact Assessment Theory and Terminology, Module 2 covers the EIA Process and Regulatory Literacy, Module 3 focuses on Practical Experience and Technical Skills for EIA, and Module 4 is a Capstone Project.
Dr. Kevin Hanna
Kevin Hanna’s research focuses on environmental impact assessment and natural resources development. A key part of his research is working with Indigenous organizations to help outline data/information management approaches and tools, define best practices for impact assessment, and develop case studies to help communities design new methods for assessing projects. His current work focuses on the Canadian west, north, and Arctic.
Dr. Lauren Arnold
Dr. Lauren Arnold is the Project Manager at the Centre for Environmental Assessment Research. Her recent research has included developing Indigenous-led Impact Assessments and supportive guidance, cumulative effects frameworks, and impact assessment training workshops. She completed PhD and Masters degrees at the University of British Columbia, and an undergraduate degree at the University of Saskatchewan and has experience working for the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada.
Upon successful completion of all program requirements, learners are awarded a UBC Okanagan Letter of Proficiency (a non-credit credential). Learners will also receive a verifiable digital badge (which has descriptive metadata about the learning achievement) for sharing through digital channels.
